Amish Country

For those of us living in Amish Country, we treasure the blessing of everyday scenes which represent an almost forgotten part of our past. Holmes County, Ohio, is home to the largest Amish Community in the world. Both the Amish and Mennonites find their roots within the Swiss Brethren, with Amish being the most conservative segment of the Anabaptist movement. They first began settling in the United States in 1720 as a safe haven from religious persecution in their home countries of Germany and Switzerland.

The Amish believe that the bible teaches a simple life of humility, family, community, and separation from the world. While focused on these relationships, they shun many modern conveniences that are not in keeping with their simple life, and remain unencumbered by the stresses of a fast-paced "English" lifestyle.

Riding in horse-drawn buggies, wearing simple unadorned clothing, using no electricity in their homes, and often sending their children to one-room Amish schools, they are productive and exemplary citizens, producing quality products which are shipped around the globe, while co-existing within a modern world.

Whether you desire to investigate the history and beliefs of the Amish and Mennonite faiths, design your own custom heirloom furniture, shop our quaint back road quilt, gift, and hardware stores, or explore the area's ever expanding wineries, Ohio's Amish Country has an abundance of variety to help you slow down and relax.
